Five men have men caught by police after they were involved in burglaries all over Suffolk, including some in Debenham, worth more than £335,000. The police were able to track the gang down after they left DNA evidence in the form of half eaten food, drinks cans and an apple in one of the cars they abandoned. The police set up a fake second hand shop where the gang tried to sell some of the goods they stole. The men stole cars, computers and laptops, often while the home-owners were asleep upstairs. The five men were charged with conspiracy to steal and commit burglary and pleaded guilty, while another group of men have pleaded guilty to handling stolen goods.
5 October 2009:
Fire-fighters from Debenham attended to a crash on the A140 in Suffolk today involving a red Vauxhall Corsa and a black Ford. The crash happened at 8.30am at Thwaite near Eye, and caused the road to be closed or two hours. The driver of the Corsa was released from the car by the fire-fighters and taken to the Norfolk and Norwich University hospital by the East Anglian Air Ambulance. He suffered serious leg injuries. Another person was treated at the scene.
8 August 2009:
Fire-fighters from Debenham were among those who attended to a crash involving an elderly man in Dennington on Friday night. The Citroen hit a house leaving the man trapped in his car with serious injuries. The fire-fighters were forced to use cutting equipment to release him and he was taken to hospital by ambulance.
17 March 2009:
The Environment Agency and Joint Emergency Planning Unit have released a flood plan for the Suffolk area. The document gives details of how information regarding possible floods will be issued to home-owners and councils. It also details the response of the emergency services and the areas of responsibility for the police, fire and rescue departments, the Environment Agency and the government The report points out that the low lying nature of Suffolk and the proximity to the coast line could cause tidal flooding and ground water problems.
19 December 2007:
Fire-fighters from around the county including Debenham, battled to save a thatched cottage from fire last night. The grade II listed property on the Old Norwich Road in Yaxley has been completely gutted. The owners were said to have been inside at the time and were warned of the fire by a passer by. Fire-fighters were able to help the couple retrieve some belongings from the property once it became clear that the thatch could not be saved. While the house was extensively damaged, it is believed it could be rebuilt. The insurers and English Heritage were informed and an investigation has been started.
12 December 2007:
The driver of a Renault Clio was pronounced dead at the scene following a crash on the B1077 at Witnesham this morning. A passenger suffered life threatening injuries. The road was closed for most of the day while investigations were carried out. The crash followed what many have said was the coldest night of the winter so far and despite gritters being out on the roads, many country lanes remain icy. Police have said that another car left the road near Debenham although no one was injured. The AA have warned drivers to take care on the roads, with icy patches and freezing temperatures expected once again tonight.
1 November 2005:
A major route between Norfolk and Suffolk was closed for 8 hours on Sunday due to a crash which killed two people including James Smy from Debenham. James aged 21 and Kirsty Cracknell 24, from Stoke Ash were travelling in a red Vauxhall Tigra when they were involved in a collision with a Volkswagon Sharon. The accident occurred on the A140 at Thwaite. The people in the other car were taken to hospital.
14 March 2005:
A Debenham man is in Ipswich hospital after he was involved in an accident at Earl Soham on Thursday. The police have arrested a 44 year old women on suspicion of failing to stop after the accident. She has been bailed until April 15 when she is due to appear at Woodbridge Police station. Police are carrying out further investigations.
